Operating room
Cataract surgery is performed using modern phacoemulsification
procedure with the ultrasound or the latest, the so-called aqualase -
without using ultrasounds.
Cataract surgery is performed from
microscopic size incision (about 3 mm), sutureless, under topical 'eye
drop' anesthesia, as an outpatient procedure, without the need for an
overnight stay.
The surgery is performed by an experienced eye
surgeon. We are able to operate some patients, whose health condition
is a contraindication to general, peribular or retrobular anesthesia.
Our anesthesiologist monitors the patient condition throughout the
operation.
Phacoemulsification
Phacoemulsification is the state-of-the-art for cataract surgery
today. It consists in breaking the clouded lens into smaller pieces and
then removing them from the eye, leaving the capsular bag intact. The
new artificial lens is inserted into the capsular bag. The whole
surgical procedure is performed through a micro incision in the eye (3
mm) and thanks to it no stitches are required.
Intraocular lenses
Intraocular lenses implanted in our Eye Care Centre are of AcrySof® type.
They are the top quality surgical materials replacing human lenses removed during cataract surgery.
AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens is
the only in the world semi-accommodative lens that due to its special
optic design in majority of cases (about 80%) restores visual acuity in
full range of vision. The use of this lens enables the surgeon to
address both cataract and presbyopia during the same operation. This
provides the patient with maximum freedom from prescription glasses.
Benefits of the proposed method of cataract surgery
- The cataract procedure can be performed in topical 'eye drop' anesthesia, which is the most gentle for the patient.
- Quick
healing process thanks to microincisional procedure (about 3 mm) - this
incision is significantly smaller than in case of other methods.
- The sutures are not required so the risk of post-operative astigmatism is significantly lower.
- Reduced recovery time after surgery and possibility to go home on the day of the operation.
- Most patients are able to resume their normal activities in several days after the surgery.
